Case Study: One Community, One Club: The Story of Burnaby Football Club

In the heart of Burnaby, British Columbia, a transformational journey unfolded, leading to the creation of Burnaby Football Club (BFC). This case study delves into the amalgamation of five local clubs, driven by the vision to offer a comprehensive development pathway for the community. From overcoming fragmentation to fostering unity, BFC emerged as a beacon of inclusive football excellence, revolutionizing grassroots football in BC.

Challenge: Fragmentation in Community Development Pathway

Before the inception of BFC, Burnaby grappled with a disjointed football landscape. The absence of a cohesive development pathway hindered the community’s ability to nurture talent effectively. In most communities, clubs compete over talent instead of working together to enhance development in their community.

Objective

Recognizing the challenges, the clubs embarked on a mission to unify disparate clubs and forge a collective vision for football development in the region that would be the first of its kind.

Solution: Amalgamation and Strategic Alignment

BFC’s journey began with a bold initiative: the amalgamation of local clubs to bring together high-performance and participation-oriented entities with a comprehensive platform for players of all levels. This endeavor required meticulous planning, strategic communication, and unwavering commitment from everyone in the district.

Key Steps in the Journey:

  1. Creating a Compelling Case for Merger: Through extensive consultation and collaboration, FSQ supported BFC in the creation of a pitch deck to share the benefits of amalgamation to improve development in the community – for players, coaches, parents, staff, and partners. By highlighting the synergies and opportunities inherent in unity, stakeholders were inspired to embrace the vision of a unified football community.
  2. Securing Stakeholder Alignment: BFC navigated the complex landscape of club dynamics, garnering support from district authorities and fellow clubs. This process involved transparent communication, stakeholder engagement sessions, and a shared commitment to the greater good of football development.
  3. Strategic Planning and Operational Execution: With alignment secured, BFC embarked on the strategic planning phase. FSQ led the development of a comprehensive Strategic Direction and Plan, coupled with operational blueprints, providing a roadmap for seamless integration. Working groups were established let by the FSQ leadership team (Stan Peake, Nelson Soh, Taryn Lipschitz, and Matt Young) to address financial, communication, governance, and player development aspects, ensuring a holistic approach to club formation. Stan Peake led the governance group, Nelson Soh led the finance and accounting working group, Taryn Lipschitz led the Marketing & Communication working group, and Matt Young led the Player & Coach Development working group.
  4. Leadership and Change Management: BFC recognized the importance of strong leadership in driving transformation. Through meticulous recruitment and selection processes, an Executive Director was appointed to spearhead the merger process and facilitate cultural alignment within the new club.
  5. Project Management Excellence: Central to BFC’s success was its commitment to effective project management. FSQ provided support with a
disciplined approach to facilitate smooth execution and minimize disruption during the transition phase. This ensured clarity of objectives, timelines, and resource allocation.

Results: A Paradigm Shift in Football Development

The culmination of these efforts heralded a new era for football in Burnaby. BFC emerged as the vanguard of inclusive football excellence, offering a comprehensive player development pathway unparalleled in British Columbia. From grassroots initiatives to elite programs, BFC ensured that every individual in Burnaby could envision themselves in the football journey.

The creation of Burnaby Football Club stands as a testament to the power of collaboration, strategic vision, and unwavering commitment to community development.
