Physical Literacy Gap Identified

Based on our profile in the allied health care sector, we were called to provide solutions for the delivery of physical education in schools.

  • Derived from research, we created two tools to support the activation of physical literacy: a healthy habits tracker & a fundamental movement skills tracker.
  • The idea: harness technology to meet people (kids) where they were with professional content and expertise. We self-funded the digital delivery platform.
  • At the same time, Nike completed their 45M global Designed to Move study, identifying 7 filters for success. We were recognized as the only organization that met the 7 filters requirements.
  • Nike contacted and invited us to be a participating organization in their Designed to Move initiative. The problem was, there was no activation leadership.

Global Market Validation

We expanded globally:

  • The 60MinuteKidsclub program scaled to English-speaking schools across 8 countries off the side of the desk. The Fundamental Movement Skills (FMS) were downloaded in over 150 countries.
  • We received numerous requests from universities around the world to license the FMS to instruct teachers ‘how to’ assess movement skill development and quantify Physical Education.
  • The program was white-labeled for a Norwegian pilot and has since been indigenized as the Warriors of Wellness for the Indigenous Parks & Recreation Council in British Columbia, Canada.

Documenting the Story in Schools

We began to document the story to share with others what was really going on:

  • Based on the success of the program, we became globally recognized as experts in the activation of physical literacy.
  • We produced our first documentary No Running which explored the state of physical education from a global perspective. It has been featured in film festivals such as the Lithuanian Olympic Federation.

Documenting the Story in Sports

  • Based on the success of No Running we were asked to speak to the youth sports crisis: decrease in participation, infrastructure & leadership by local, provincial, and national executive directors.
  • We filmed and released our 2nd documentary: The Cost of Winning. A global perspective on the gaps and opportunity for quality sport experiences. We shared it with the world.
  • There are 8 reasons for the decline of participation: lack of free play, lack of fundamental movement skills proficiency, marginalization of physical education, lack of quality coaching, early sport specialization, technology, no fun, and cost – all solvable through trusted direct to consumer products, content, and expertise.
  • We were tapped by the USOPC to create their American Development Model Activation & Accountability Framework and presented it to 28 National Governing Bodies (NGB) in Colorado.
  • The message from them was clear in that they wanted to support and leadership for their member organizations across the country.
  • We operationalized the 5C’s of athlete development, created the Quality Sport Hub to curate best practices and created an operating system for quality sport.
  • We also created the Personal Sport Record: A platform designed to support and track development that is owned and controlled by the athlete with a revenue share model with the clubs.

International Consulting

We connected and began to work with international organizations:

  • We met with Olympic Federations and staff in Switzerland, Austria, Lichtenstein, Italy, and Norway to listen to their concerns and share our findings.
  • Lichtenstein has requested a supported pathway from physical education to high performance [digitizing the fundamental sport skills of skiing].

The Operating System’s First Followers

Organizations have engaged us to implement the Operating System within their organization:

  • We licensed the sport operating system to Canada Soccer and were hired to help rebuild the PGA of America’s athlete, coach, and club development pathway.
  • With Canada Soccer: support clubs across the country with their operating process.
  • With PGA of America: support the development from FMS’s to Fundamental Sport Skills and coach pathway.
  • We have connected with consultants of Concacaf, FIFA, and tiger IOC who are all pushing for holistic athlete development without an activation strategy.

TedX Talk ‘Give Sport Back To The Kids’

In “Give Sport Back To The Kids,” Matt Young sheds light on a troubling reality: an alarming 70% attrition rate plagues the 40 million young athletes who register for sports in North America every year. This exodus from the playing fields is not due to a lack of talent or passion; it’s a direct result of the transformation of the joy of playing sports into the chore of working in sports.

Kids, once drawn to sports for the sheer thrill of competition and camaraderie, now find themselves ensnared in a web of adult-induced pressures, unrealistic demands, and, in some unfortunate cases, outright abuse.

But amidst this disheartening trend, Matt Young brings forth a powerful and inspiring message that demands our attention. It’s a rallying cry to put our children’s wants and needs at the forefront, ahead of adult ambitions and egos.

Supporting NSOs, PSOs, and LSOs

In the realm of sport clubs, the importance of strategic planning cannot be overstated. Without a plan, there is no clear purpose, and without purpose, there is no point. Strategic planning is the compass that guides these clubs towards a meaningful and purposeful existence.

  • To date, FSQ has facilitated over 50 strategic plans for a variety of sport organizations including Waterloo Minor Soccer Club, Mountain United Football Club, Brandon Minor Baseball Association, and many more.

Keynote speaker at the Canadian Swimming Coaches Association and Swim Alberta emphasizing the essence of coaching as “development” within the swim community.

  • It highlighted the need for all stakeholders to comprehend that we’re not just teaching swimming; we’re nurturing young athletes physically, mentally, and emotionally. Furthermore, it stressed the significance of effective communication channels in this journey. Coaches, administrators, and parents must be aligned in their messages and approaches. This unity ensures consistency and clarity in guiding the young swimmers toward success.
  • Regardless of coaching experience or role, the keynote stressed that everyone must be on the same page. In coaching, unity is strength. It allows us to provide a holistic and supportive environment where swimmers can thrive and grow into not just better athletes but also better individuals

Coach Development & Player Development

  • Launched the Stakeholder Development Calendar with Saskatchewan Soccer Association, BC Soccer Association, and Ontario Soccer. It’s not just a calendar; it’s a bridge that connects coaches, athletes, parents, and administrators. This calendar is our compass, guiding us toward a future where every member of our sports community is not just heard but understood. Together, we’ll create an environment where athletes flourish, bonds strengthen, and victories are not just on the scoreboard but in the unity of our sports family.
  • As the keynote speaker at the Ontario Soccer Summit, had the opportunity to share the role we all play in sport.
  • Ran a development workshop at the Ontario Soccer Summit on how to create a strategic plan, operationalize it, and implement it in your sport organization
  • Launched the Coach Development Course, a game-changing initiative for aspiring and volunteer coaches who wanted to advance their skills, but lacked the time, finances, or resources to do so. This course covered key concepts for a player-centered experience and provides practical knowledge to activate them in real-world settings.
  • Launched a webinar series that featured industry experts such as Larissa Mills and Dr. Tracy Vaillancourt on topics such as the impact of phones on team performance and the evolving relationship between parents and youth sports.
  • Worked with Tennis Canada on their holistic player development pathway, focusing on the 5C’s (Competence, Confidence, Character, Connection, and Culture), bringing transformative benefits to the world of tennis.
  • Supported Tennis Canada with their First Set program, a new national program to introduce Canadian youth to the sport of tennis. Designed to inspire youth and families in communities across Canada to try tennis and learn fundamental tennis skills in a fun, welcoming, safe, and positive environment.
